FUNDAMENTALS OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

This is a one day basic training course providing fundamental knowhow on occupational health and safety matters faced by employees at their work environment. Knowledge of industrial hygiene, an art and science of recognizing, evaluating and controlling workplace hazards that may cause injury and illness, is an essential component of the morning session followed by occupational safety and environmental management. The course is designed to cover fundamental issues faced by managers and employees alike.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course attendees should be able to understand what is occupational health and safety, basic principles of industrial hygiene, how to recognize, evaluate and control occupational hazards, understand various technical terms used in the industry, describe the effects of various chemical, physical and biological agents, apply basic principles and practices to improve the safety performance of workers and their working environment, accident investigation and prevention, fundamental methods of hazard controls, and understanding regulatory compliance.  

COURSE CONTENTS

The course will cover fundamentals of Occupational health and safety. The first session will focus of introduction and history, what is Industrial hygiene, standards, codes and guidelines, toxicological principles, chemical and biological hazards, thermal stress, noise, lock-out/tag-out, ionizing radiation, exposure assessment and use of various instrumentation, using proper control measures, etc.

The evening session will focus on Occupational safety; recognizing hazards, accident investigation, hierarchy of control measures: engineering & administrative controls and personal protective equipment, incident investigation, rules and procedures, training, safety audits, written programs, recordkeeping, basics of ergonomics, fire safety, lockout/tagout, emergency preparedness, managing safety and health programs, professional ethics and resources.

COURSE DIRECTOR

MUHAMMAD AKRAM, PH.D., CHMM

Dr. Akram has over 30 years of experience in OHS field, providing training and consulting, managing occupational health program at Columbia and Rutgers University, developing OHS programs, conducting research, and enforcement of OSHA regulations. Dr. Akram have several scientific publications to his credit. He is an active member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and serves as their Ambassador to Pakistan. He also served as President of their International Affairs Committee. Currently, he is a Senior Faculty Member at the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of the Punjab, Lahore, developing Occupational Health and Safety program in Pakistan.

·         Chemical and mechanical engineers responsible for such responsibilities or needs OHS awareness
